Single dad of an autistic boy. Started life as a Republican moderate; would now be considered a Democratic liberal. Ironic, considering that my politics are essentially unchanged.

What should Obama do? w/poll

Thu Jun 19, 2008 at 01:21:52 PM PDT

I am not a big diary guy, as anyone could tell by checking my history.  But I'm seeing a lot of random diaries asking for Obama to say something about the FISA "compromise".  Let's set up a poll, and get it on the Rec. List.  (BTW, I am not a TU, and don't care, so this is not about that.  You won't find any tip jar here.)

Breaking:  FBI Raids Office of Special Counsel

Tue May 06, 2008 at 10:14:16 AM PDT

From the Wall Street Journal:

WASHINGTON -- Federal Bureau of Investigation agents raided the Office of Special Counsel here, seizing computers and documents belonging to the agency chief Scott Bloch and staff.

More than a dozen FBI agents served grand jury subpoenas shortly after 10 a.m., shutting down the agency's computer network and searching its offices, as well as Mr. Bloch's home. Employees said the searches appeared focused on alleged obstruction of justice by Mr. Bloch during the course of an 2006 inquiry into his conduct in office.

He Makes Me Feel Good About America

Thu Jan 31, 2008 at 10:37:08 AM PDT

I have been an Edwards supporter for a long time.  I voted for him in 2004, in the Pennsylvania primary.  (Of course, by then, the race was over.)  Barring a Gore entry, which would have given me pause, I have considered myself a pro-Edwards Democrat ever since.  Why?  Because he has had the willingness to talk about poverty and fairness in a way that reminds me of Martin and Bobby.  (I won't say that nobody else has; Jesse did.  And I voted for him, once, for that reason.)  And Edwards has told the truth about the extent to which our system of government has been hijacked by moneyed interests.
With his having removed himself from the race, I have chosen to throw in my lot with Obama.  I wish to explain why now, because I think it is important to articulate why before Super Tuesday.
The title of this diary comes from a conversation I had with a Reagan supporter in 1984.  (More after the jump:)

Autism; PDD/NOS; Aspergers, etc.: a poll. Part II

Wed Dec 19, 2007 at 10:56:43 AM PDT

Thought the community might enjoy a modest diversion from the spate of "Why my candidate is the Messiah, and yours is the Anti-Christ, and he/she can't beat the GOP in November" offerings.
About a year ago, in response to a diary by Frankenoid, I published a diary poll, which asked what the community's experience has been with autism.
The diary, while far from ever making it to the Recommended List, (hardly a goal for a lurker like me), did generate some interest, with the poll garnering 116 responses.
I am wondering where the community stands now.  Poll after the fold.

Autism; PDD/NOS; Asperger's, etc.: a poll

Wed Nov 22, 2006 at 07:12:00 AM PDT

I read Frankenoid's diary on high-functioning autism, and her challenges, and her thoughts.  This was followed by a great many responses from folks who are raising, or who know, or who are human beings with autism/PDD-NOS/Asperger's.
Just figured it might be useful, for the greater community, to get a sense of how many folks here are touched by this state of being.  (Please note; I don't call this a "condition" or a "disability".  That involves a value judgement which I am unwilling to accept).
I'll start:  My son would be classified as a low-functioning autistic.  By that, I mean that he is not toilet trained, at seven, is generally non-verbal, and engages in much of the "stimming" behavior classically associated with autism.  I am blessed to have him in my life.

The Battle for the Free Mind

Wed Oct 11, 2006 at 08:22:35 PM PDT

The last few days have crystalized some thoughts which have been floating through my mind for the last several months.  I had thought of writing after the election, since it's an idea with long-term action in mind.

But some very modest encouragement I gave to another diarist, who wrote on a subject which seemed to get little traction, has led me to conclude that there is no time like the present.

So, here goes:  This is a Christian nation.

Remember Disney? (With Poll)

Mon Oct 02, 2006 at 02:41:28 PM PDT

Not too long ago, we were all hot and bothered about the Disney docu-fantasy "Path to 9/11".  I know, that was one scandal and at least one evisceration of the Constitution ago.  And ABC is the reportorial attack dog on the disgraceful cover-up of Foley's misdeeds.
So, how's it going?  Are we all still boycotting all Disney product?  Or are we sneaking a peek at Brian Ross?  Or watching our college or pro teams on ESPN?  Or going to the latest Disney movie, because it's all about the kids?
My acid test is tonight.  My Eagles are on ESPN.  I'll be listening to the local radio, as Merrill Reese gets way to excited, and Mike Quick refers to a great hit as the "Matt Blatt Splat of the game."  (Sigh).  What about you folks?
Poll and tip jar after the flip.

Boycott ESPN

Thu Sep 07, 2006 at 01:20:09 PM PDT

NFL football starts tonight.  I've been waiting for it for months.  The first game tonight pits the Steelers against the Dolphins.  I'll be popping the popcorn, and voicing a lot of loud and clueless opinions to my buddies, who will quietly tolerate my nonsense.  Not.  Sunday, my team, the Eagles, will be playing.  The city will be watching, and praying that last year was an aberration.

But the big night is always Monday Night.  As in Monday Night Football.  Even if I don't care about the teams, I'll turn on the game.  This week, the Redskins, in my team's division, will be playing the Vikings, in my conference.  I would be watching this game.  Not now.  Why, you ask?
