The New Technology of Daily Kos
Thu Mar 20, 2008 at 02:54:00 PM PDT
Or, a look at what I've been working on for the site.
It's been three months or so in the making, but today I've finally finished moving the site to its new hardware. Many of the major and minor things that could go wrong, went wrong, but at last everything's squared away and we're up and running on the new machines. Now that that's finished, I can even start rolling out some new features that I've been waiting on until this was all finished.
WARNING: There will be honest, frank discussion of computers and technology issues in this diary. Please, for the love of God, do not post a comment saying that you don't understand what I'm talking about. It will only antagonize the violent beast within.
Let's get started.
Cluster Bombs and "Values": Why We Need Obama
Sat Feb 09, 2008 at 10:53:46 AM PDT
As the post-Super Tuesday road meanders through the rest of February and through the rest of the pre-convention months, we will surely see a continued intensity of Obama and Clinton supporters making their respective cases for their candidate and against the other. This diary is one of those pieces, and it advocates for Obama and against Clinton, not with exaggerated zealotry or vitriol, but with a focus on a mini-issue that I think is illustrative of a larger one, which is: How do we wrest the concept of "values" from conservative radicals and clearly articulate and be proud of our values as progressives? Please follow me...
Let the f**king clusterf**k begin, kos!!

Sorry, kos, as of this afternoon, according to exit polls, nobody but Republicans seems very interested in the Michigan Republican primary. It's not a very nice day, turnout is light, according to the Grand Rapids Press.
On Tuesday there were both Democratic and Republican primaries and though ballot maneuvering left the Democratic side in essence non-competitive, apparently it kept some Democrats from migrating to the Republican contest — where they made up fewer than one in 10 voters. In 2000, Republicans made up only 48 percent of the GOP primary electorate; Tuesday they were two-thirds of it. A quarter of Republican primary voters Tuesday called themselves independent, down from 35 percent eight years ago.
Army Reservist, Suicidal, Killed by Police Sniper.

This is among the saddest and most unnecessary fatalities of the War on Iraq --
Army Reservist Didn't Want to Go to Iraq, Killed in Police Stand-Off
The Army reservist had recently been called to active duty and didn't want to go to Iraq.
So, he locked himself in his parents home and threatened suicide.
As police moved in with tear gas, Dean appeared with a weapon and a sniper opened fire, killing him.
This tale starts on Christmas Day...
Turkey to US, Iraq: Deal with the Kurds...or We Will.
Tue Jul 18, 2006 at 07:17:54 AM PDT
Oh, goody. More Middle East troubles.
For two days, Turkey's (brace yourself) Higher Anti-Terror Board met to discuss what to do about ongoing troubles with the Kurdish Worker's Party (aka PKK) which has led a longstanding, low-level insurgency in eastern Turkey for many years.
The outcome of that meeting:
Turkish Foreign Ministry Under-secretary Ali Tuygan met US Ambassador to Turkey Ross Wilson and Iraqi Ambassador Sabah Omran separately.
The meeting was interpreted as a “signal of a cross-border operation;” however, the US did not welcome the developments.
Wilson said the US does not favor a possible cross-border operation by Turkey, and added Turkey, Iraq, and the US’s joint fight against the PKK will be more functional and sensible than a unilateral operation.
Short form: The Turks probably figured that Israel's getting the green light to go after Hizbollah was grounds to make this demand vis a vis the PKK. They've not taken a cross-border 'operation' off the table, either.
And here you were, thinking you had the Middle East all figured out. :)
